I respect your opinion Dreamer, but I think that some of the cliches in this article are good and tear apart what many traditional designers live by. I also don't think the author is taking an overly negative tone about these cliches but is more just stating them, but he probably is paying them out. For example cliche #5 about names is really annoying, the greenwash cliche and the diagram cliche undermine the profession of industrial design as being a legitimate profession. So it is good they are discussed in open forum.

We must remember many industrial designers purely beautify products by making them look sexy, like isn't that what like 90% of the furniture industry is about? So I think for a designer to live by 'form follows function' is foolish.

But yeah I don't think design is in the eye of the beholder like the author, I think there is such thing as a naturally good and bad aesthetic.

Aren't designers so clever? Especially designers who are cynical about everything and want to make everything better to the point of self defeatism ;-) It's actually very sad that designers can tend so far toward ideallism that they disappear up their own '*!holes. Ripping into those quotes at the end is rubbish - only a bible bashing creationist could denigrate the most brilliant of all ID mantras (Dieter Rams peace be upon you); 'FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION'. Now get on with it dreamers - and figure out what functional role 'beauty' plays in the world and how to put facts and data to the realms of subjectivity. Who cares about cliche? Personally I find it cliche to think of cliches in the negative.

A better text to read to take the focus off cliche; Alain De Botton - 'The architecture of happiness'. But then it's a fairly well known book which might already be too 'cliche' for some of you dreamers to even consider.

Remember - if you want to be a professional designer you need to get paid for designing. Which means that if you have your own strong views on 'beauty', despite it being in the eye of the beholder, you need to figure out what makes your version of 'ideallism' worth paying for.

Or are we also too cynical of money to do that? Prefer to sleep it rough maybe.. or just top ourselves amidst our own ideallistic dream?

The customer comes first cliche is a bit of a given. The name calling cliche was interesting - how people come up with names for products is bewildering - how's that Ipad
