Yeah Mat I definitely agree with you in regards to advanced manufacturing, China is definitely behind in this area. Your comment is great and much appreciated!

Good article, though I'd just like to add a couple of points that I think are important to keep in mind when discussing China. China has significant internal problems, and its current ruling structure is unsustainable. As for their manufacturing quality, it does lag behind quite significantly from Western European and American competitors; China still has to import advanced weapon systems from Russia (it simply lacks the knowledge to produce them itself), for example. This may not be very apparent in a lot of consumer level products, but for high tech manufacturing and chemicals, most conservative estimates put them at least a decade behind the West. They are even further behind in the sciences, with a draconian academic environment that perversely rewards obedience.
In my opinion, I would also suggest leveraging the high tech nature of bleeding edge research and scientific development as an avenue to compete with Chinese industry- this has been proven throughout human history as perhaps the most effective means of dominating an adversary, and in this case all the cards are in the West's deck.

I love China, I think they should be embraced and definitely not seen as an enemy. So many westerners think China is evil but they are not, you just have to meet the people to make a real judgement.

the statistics about china's manufacturing labor force are truly staggering. The size of manufacturing workers almost doubles my countries population

I just wish there was an easier way to compete with China. I work for a bag design business in Vermont and we are part design, part manufacturing and we have struggled so much on the manufacturing side of things to a point where the plant will likely close or the manufacturers will loose their jobs to China
